How Much Water Do Succulents Need: A Life-Saving Guide

It is best to water succulents once every ten days from fall to spring and during the active growth period. The watering requirements of succulents indoors, outdoors, in containers, and in your garden all have slightly different needs.

Watering Succulents Indoors

In general, indoor succulents must be watered at least once a week. Plus, they need sufficient time to store water in their leaves and for the potting soil to dry out appropriately between watering. Just follow these tips and tricks for watering succulent plants indoors:

  •  Use the watering with a short pour spout.
  • Apply water to the succulent plant's soil until it is completely saturated.
  • Avoid saturating its leaves to ward off rot from the top down, as there will not be fresh airflow and sufficient heat to dry the leaves efficiently when planted indoors.
  • Allow water to dehydrate through the holes of the pot thoroughly. If there's a saucer beneath the plant, dump out the water that dampens through the soil.
  • Let the soil dry completely.

Water Succulents Outdoors

It is always essential to pay attention to succulent plants as they will give you different signs on when to water them and when not to. If the soil is wet, you shouldn't water the plants. And if you notice that its soil is extremely dry and the plant foliage appears dry or shriveled, it's the best time to water it.

Watering succulents outdoors varies greatly depending on where you live. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain, you will never have to worry about when to water your succulents. You may even have to be concerned about getting your succulent overwatered.

How Often to Water Succulents in Containers

  • Water the plant's base unless the soil is entirely saturated.
  • Let the water drain through the holes of the succulent pot.
  • Allow soil to dry completely.
  • If heavy rainfall is imminent, move your pots to a protected, sheltered location.

How Often to Water Succulents In-Ground

  • Decrease watering during the winter and fall months - so that your beautiful succulents can survive cold temperatures.
  • During the hot days, it'll need more watering.
  • Saturated soil generally makes succulents weaker to frost damage in the winter months.
  • Water the succulent plants thoroughly and allow the soil to dry in the watering sessions.

How Do You Know When A Succulent Needs Water?

When a succulent plant needs water will entirely depend on a few things: the succulent itself and the season. Yes, they grow more in particular conditions, like all plants. The warmer months are the growing phase of the succulent. This is when you will want to utilize the method of "soak-and-dry" once every two weeks. During the cooler days, they enter the phase of dormancy in which they do not need as much water. At that time, you will need to depend more on reading the signs of the plant than on following a schedule. Succulent watering schedules should reflect the season and the humidity of your location.

In either season, don't water the succulent unless the soil is entirely dried from top to bottom. And if you are facing issues in gauging that on your own, you can use a couple of other methods to test. First and foremost, you can get a special moisture meter that'll read the estimated moisture level of the soil, or you can also depend on the pot weight. Therefore, when you pick up the succulent pot and it weighs nothing, that's a clear sign that your plant is ready to swim! Let the succulent watering begin. Over time, you will get an excellent feel for how your succulent pot feels in your hands when it's hydrated enough and adequately dry to need a drink.

Now that you know all about when the succulent needs water and how often you should water them let's have a close look at what things can affect how much you need to water your succulent;

What Things Affect How Much You Water Your Succulent?

Some variables that can affect the amount of water you should give a succulent involve:

  • Succulent Location: If the succulent is located outside in the wind and heat, it can consume more water than indoors.
  • Succulents Types and Size: Usually, the bigger plants intake more water compared to the baby or smaller succulent plants. Certain succulent types need frequent watering as their leaves are tiny and cannot hold as much water. For these, you need to give them water once a week in warm months.
  • Succulent Container Type: If the container contains a drain hole, you can provide the succulent with more water, as excess water will ultimately drain out. However, if it does not have a hole, try not to fill the container with a lot of water. Often succulents without a drain hole run the risk of overwatering.
  • How was the Succulent Planted: If you put pea gravel in the succulent planter's bottom, it will boost the roots of the succulent up off the button, leaving space for excess water. In addition, it also permits air to get down into its pot more conveniently and dry it out rapidly. If the succulent is not properly planted with pea gravel, go ahead & replant it!
